Nearing the midpoint of the varsity soccer schedule, Wakefield’s varsity soccer team has completed the most disappointing week of the season. Although the team managed to grasp another victory in their conference, the team was handed their first defeat of the season, leaving the Wakefield record at 6-1.
In the first game of the week, Wakefield raised its conference record to 3-0 with a 6-2 victory over Word of Life School. After a slow start, Wakefield punched four quick shots into the net en route to a 4-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the team looked sluggish, however, aided by Marc Foerstemann’s second goal of the game, Wakefield held on for the 5-2 victory.
In the week’s second game, Wakefield suffered its first loss of the season to a strong St. Anne’s Bellfield team. Wakefield took an early lead on a goal from right wing Larry Tarr, of Warrenton. However, St. Anne’s quickly retaliated to knot the score at 1-1 at the half.
In the second half, Wakefield’s offense was constantly stymied by a stringent St. Anne’s defense. Late in the game, St. Anne’s scored on a fast break to take a 2-1 lead. Although excellent play from halfbacks Jorge Gonzales, of Huntly, and
