bven Newsweek magazine took note of the deteriorating GOP position in Virginia, reporting that the Republican National Committee had all but written off the Durrette candidacy. The magazine reported that the RNC had turned down a Durrette request for $500,000 to fund a last-minute advertising blitz, and a top RNC strategist is quoted as saying that Durrette needs “a new campaign from top to bottom, and it’s too late for that.” Newsweek said the RNC based its judgment on a poll showing Baliles with a 16 percentage point lead.

But a day later an even more devastating Washington Post poll was released which indicated Democratic candidate Gerald Bailies had amassed a 19 point lead over Durrette, with the count standing at 50 percent to 31 percent. Amazingly, Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Douglas Wilder held a 48 to 26 percent lead over Republican John Chichester while Democratic Attorney General candidate Mary Sue Terry led Republican Buster O’Brien by a count of 43 to 27 percent.
