fill at the Stover site at 35 years if an elevation of 555 feet is the topping off point, and 59 years if the mound is elevated to 575 feet. The highest elevation presently on the site is 559.2 feet, Mr. Joyce told the supervisors.
That, the landfill engineer noted, assumes the present volume of 15 tons of trash per day continues. If the volume increases, he added, the life expectancy would decrease accordingly.
“There is no difference with trench and fill, or with grade and fill,” Mr. Joyce said, in response to a question from Jackson District Supervisor Ellis Bingham. “The same techniques are used with the liner and leachate collection system.” In dollar figures, he added, an area fill is likely to be less expensive than a trench and fill because the initial expense of excavation is not necessary.
