Although this newspaper generally declines to investigate information from people who refuse to go “on the record,’’ a judgment was made that the charge was sufficiently serious to warrant investigation. That investigation indicated, after telephone calls to several individuals (including one specifically recommended by the anonymous source) that no such memo had been issued.
At that time, the facts were that allegations had been made by an anonymous source. Those allegations were refuted by several individuals who agreed to be quoted, by name, in the article.
Last week, a copy of the memo was delivered to the editor’s home, and a story about the memo appears in this week’s paper — also on page one.
The Rappahannock News made no “claims'’ for or against the information — it merely reported the results of the investigation made as a result of allegations made by the Friends of Old Route 211. The “unequivocal denial” came from a highway department official, not from the Rappahannock News.
