Road hunting
penalties set
Just in time for hunting season, the Board of Supervisors last week enacted an ordinance prohibiting the hunting of game birds and game animals on or within 100 yards of a primary or secondary road. This local option law had been adopted originally in 1986 but without specifying penalties; this time, the board categorized violation as a class 11 misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a $500 fine.
“All of us know the county has in the past experienced considerable problems with shooting from the road,” said Bob Dennis, one of a handful of speakers at the public hearing Sept. 6 on the proposed ordinance. “Some people call it road hunting, but I don’t think it’s hunting.”
Mr. Dennis, a landowner on Rt. 637 where so-called slob hunters have been a particular problem, noted that the joint efforts of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department and the Virginia Game Commission’s Enforcement Division brought “major improvements” to Rappahannock County last year. The ordinance under consideration will assist law enforcement officers in continuing that improvement, he said. “Take this tool and make sure it’s as workable as it can be.”
