Silo gas can be visible as a yellowish-brown gas with an odor like bleach.
Nitrogen dioxide is heavier than air and will tend to settle on top of the silage which if often stained or discolored as a result of the gas formation.
If an escape route is provided, such as an open silo door, the gas will flow down the silo chute to the base of the silo. If allowed to settle there, a dangerous situation will result.
