Prevailing winds come from the west at Wintergreen and as these winds hit the mountain range, they create updrafts. The warmth from a sunny mid-September day combined with rising columns of air and a northwest wind also provide lift and thrust for these birds of prey. That combined with the fact that the Blue Ridge is only one ridge wide in this area, and the Wintergreen area becomes the funnel that these birds pass through.

Timing is critical in an event of this type and mid-September is considered the peak time for an annual wave of Broadwing Hawks that come through the central Virginia Blue Ridge.

Registration is $35 per person and includes all weekend related events. For more information and a complete schedule, or to register by phone, call or write Jerry Acheson, Wintergreen Resort, Wintergreen, Virginia, 22958, (804) 325-2200 extension 391.
