Mr. West noted that the slogan also appears with explanatory text* in print and television advertising,* which urges parents to “push” read-J ing, sports, music, and other activities on their kids. Getting children involved with constructive activities is the surest way to keep them away from drugs, he said.
“We’ve had some questionable reactions to the stickers,” Mr. West • acknowledged, “but we try to then ! clarify: pushers of positive activ- 1 ities.” ;
The new slogan and advertising J has been picked up by the media, « Mr. West explained, with “hundreds ! of thousands of dollars worth of air- ! time” donated to spread CADRE’s j message. The Virginia Press Asso- j ciation has also agreed to urge its J member newspapers to donate ad- | vertising space to run CADRE’s j print adds, and free inserts con- j taining the envelope and the bumper sticker are being ordered by the
thousands by the state’s newspa- j pers, Mr. West said. j
The Outdoor Advertising Council i has agreed to donate 200 billboards ! across the state to display CADRE’s j message, along with a toll-free tele- j phone to call for more information.
That telephone call will result, also, in information about the caller’s local CADRE chapter, along with a number for them to contact to get in- i volved. Right now, 105 of the state’s 1 134 school divisions have CADRE ! chapters. Mr. West said he hopes to J have chapters in every district by year’s end.
