Hospice volunteers complete 24 hours of training. The fall training sessions begin Monday, Sept. 26. Classes will meet each Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 126 South Main Street in Culpeper for four weeks. Instruction includes the volunteer’s role and responsibilities, hospice philosophy, bereavement, listening skills, and a funeral home visit. Toward the end of the training, an experienced volunteer will take a trainee to visit his patient; this allows for firsthand experience regarding the variety of terminal illnesses

Hospice of the Rapidan, a United Way agency, serves Rappahannock, Madison, Orange, and Culpeper counties. For a volunteer application, call (703) 825-4840. Volunteer support allows this free service to continue, Ms. Weaver added.
