The first church records begin in 1805, and indicate that a meeting house had been built, but by 1816 was in such bad repair that a committee recommended that a new structure be built in a different location.
A piece of ground was deeded to the church by John and Jamima Zimmerman, for $18 “current money of Virginia,” a lot of one acre and three rods “near Mr. Conyer’s store.” This is the site of the present church.
According to the church records, the building committee completed construction of the new church in 1817. It was built, according to some accounts, in the shape of a cross.
