Innocent, but
punished
To the editor:
I have considered writing this letter for months and now, when I picked up the Rappahannock blew* issue dated 9-8-88, I felt that I miist.
On the front page I saw a scenic picture depicting the Washington town monument having been beautified. Around the monument were four men, “the landscaping crew.” 1 felt sick. One of the men pictured was Harold Brown, who is a-convicted murderer: convicted of killing my uncle at his home in Sperryville and currently serving his sentence here in Rappahannock. .
Why he is here instead of in .the penitentiary is a matter of public record. It was at the specific request of our sheriff, John Henry Woodward. The reasons I received from Mr. Woodward were that Harold Brown was skilled with his hands, that he felt he could serve the county by fixing things. I was also assured, he would not be allowed out of the courthouse square without a deputy in attendance.
