Hawks migrate

at Wintergreen

Observing thousands of hawks make their annual journey to the southern United States and South America will be the focus of the Fall Flight of the Raptors weekend beginning Friday, Sept. 16 at Wintergreen, Southwest of Charlottesville in Nelson County. Because of its location, Wintergreen serves as a funnel that these birds pass through on the way south.

The weekend will feature some of the East Coast’s best known raptor photographers as well as prominent field trip guides. The instructor list includes Michael Smith, a leading osprey photographer, Ed Clarke of the Virginia Wildlife Center and Mitchell Byrd, leader of the Department of Interior’s Bald Eagle Recovery Team. In addition, Paul Saunier and Allen Hale of the Virginia Society of Ornithology will demonstrate in the field their technique of attracting hawks within camera range.
