“If you are a people-person with an extra hour or two each week, Hospice of the Rapidan needs you to assist the terminally ill with living. Volunteers provide respite care, . transportation, companionship, emotional and bereavement support as well as assisting with funeral preparations, obtaining eligible benefits from the Social Security Administration or Department of Social Services, and procurement of needed medical equipment,” said Tina Weaver, director of the Hospice.
Volunteers do not provide nursing care. However, volunteers with a nursing background can often teach a family about the terminal illness and how to care for the patient.
Many times, patients and their families request occasional visits needing someone to just listen. Volunteers and patients are matched for compatibility.
