Should the stand of timber be left to grow? Should it be clearcut and reforested or clearcut and allowed to regenerate naturally? Should the timber be marked for harvest or can the diameter limit method of harvest be used? Also, certain tree species will reproduce better when using one harvest method over another.
Remember, not all trees are considered valuable. Some are considered “weeds of the forest" just like some plants in the vegetable garden are weeds. Therefore, a harvest method or management practice should be chosen that will favor the establishment of the desirable tree species. Personal consideration such as aesthetics, recreation, and wildlife also influence how the timber stand is managed.
