Members of the Board of Supervisors indicated at a Monday evening work session on the school budget for next year that they were interested in cutting about $100,000 from that budget.
“I have a question for you,” Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey said to School Superintendent David Gangel early in the meeting. “You can answer it now or answer it later. If we cut $100,000 out of this budget, do you think you could live with it?”
“I know you want what’s best for the children,” Dr. Gangel said. “I would ask for flexibility. Sure it’s going to hurt, but I came here knowing the county only has so much money.”
The supervisors indicated that they would be willing to cut by the bottom line and let the school administration and School Board determine where the cuts should come, rather than cutting by function, or line item.
However, they did suggest that the across the board salary increase might be four percent rather than six percent, and that once step increases were figured in that would still allow the county to show that teachers salaries had increased by the state mandated five percent. The county will lose $36,313 in state aid unless teachers receive a raise of five percent.
