While deaths involving all household chemicals and aspirin products have declined steadily since 1972, particularly in light of today’s safety packaging, the number of ingestions or exposures to household medicines and chemicals continues to be high. In fact, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reports that during the past several years, at least 620,000 children under the age of 5 have been exposed to potentially poisonous substances each year.
There are now some 104 Poison Control Centers in the United States that maintain information for the public on necessary treatment for the ingestion of household products and medicines. Here are some first aid measures to take if ingestion occurs:
