Earth Day 1990 holds great promise for sustaining and increasing the momentum of the environmental movement at a time when mass public support and action are critically needed.
Today environmental concern and action are not just the domain of activists. Now, due in large part to the heavy publicity environmental issues receive, the public-at-large is keenly aware of the fragility of the earth and the stress human activity places on our precious natural resources. The captains of business and industry, too, have come to realize that our environment and our economy are interdependent.
The opportunity is now for cooperation, as well as individual initiatives on behalf of our environment. The Earth Day 1990 celebration should serve as a catalyst for action.
We all benefit by preventing pollution. Recycling products is becoming a popular way to save money, conserve our natural resources and save dwindling landfill space. Energy conservation is another excellent way not only to save money, but also to reduce air pollution. By cutting the demand for electricity, we reduce emissions from the power plants that generate electricity.
