“I’m very surprised at the success of the boys team,” Mr. Mellott said. Two late starters, exchange student Francisco Vicente and James Roy, have added speed and depth to the team’s effort in the short distance events.
Junior Bobby Jenkins has also showed surprising progress in the hurdles, he added.
In the field events, Jamie Finchum “is doing really well — I’m pleased with his efforts” in the shot and discus.
Unfortunately, Coach Mellott said, the girls team this season is “just too small to be a power.”
But he has been encouraged by some individual efforts, including Uli Kleingam’s discus throws. Sara Bartlett, who Coach Mellott had hoped would pace the throwing events, was sidelined with pneumonia and is still recovering. “She’s coming back, but she’s not as strong. ”
Matt Eidson, who has been a distance runner in previous years, is running the 400 and 800 meter events. “He is a good athelete and a consistent trainer,” Coach Mellott said, explaining that his distance running experience enables him to excel at the shorter distances. In the district and regional meets, however, Coach Mellott said he expects Eidson to return to the distance races.
Given the small size of both the boys and girls teams this season, Coach Mellott pronounced himself satisfied with their showing so far. In addition to the meets already on the schedule, he said, the boys team will travel to Culpeper County High School this Saturday, April 28, for an invitational tri-meet against Warren County, Culpeper and Orange high schools.
The home meets on April 30 and May 2 both begin at 4 p.m., and the public is invited to attend and cheer the home team, the coach said.
