Though a visitor to the Rappahannock County High School track several weeks ago would not have thought it possible, the Panthers will apparently be able to host the two home track meets on their schedule.
With the cooperation of the Virginia Department of Transportation, contractor Steve Leake and a last-minute volunteer effort, Coach Scott Mellott said the track will be ready for the first, rescheduled meet against Manassas Park on Monday, April 30.
Mr. Mellott said that VDOT sent a road grader to the school to level the area where the new parking lot will be located, and while the equipment was there the operator made several passes around the track to level the surface and scrape up the grass which had begun to cover the cinder surface after several years of neglect.
Mr. Leake, a construction contractor in Sperryville, used his equipment to haul and dump several loads of new cinders for the track, as well as to spread and pack the new surface.
He also scooped out and refilled the high jump pit with fresh sand, also donated by VDOT. Some sand was also used to repair the baseball field, which was left soggy after early spring rains.
Mr. Mellott had high praise for VDOT, Mr. Leake, his volunteers and athletic director David Smith, whose persistence led to the track’s refhrbishment.
The first home meet was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but weather forced its postponement until this Monday. It will be a boys team only meet, since Manassas Park does not have a girls team.
