Tummeyer is batting .417, with an on-base percentage of .667. Along with Tummeyer, Philip Daczewitz is hitting .385, and “is a continuing team leader.” Bill Atkins leads the team in hitting, with at .448 average.
“The team is learning as it goes,” Coach Van Horn said. Without a junior varsity program, his varsity players often enter their first games without experience since Babe Ruth or Legion ball. “Little League is our training ground.
“So many teams in the district have junior varsity programs, and their guys get to the varsity with one or two years’ experience. Our guys learn by hard work.”
But even that seeming disadvantage has a bright side, Coach Van Horn said. Even the team’s youngest players get some field time, so they build a base of experience as they get older. “It gives me a nucleus for next year.”
And, he said, the team starts every game with the expectation that it will do well. “Yes, we’re in last place, but the fact that we go out and make a good showing every game speaks well for the kids. They do well for awhile, but then break down. That’s the youth and inexperience talking.”
And, the coach looks toward the second half of the season. “The teams we get rematches with — we played well against them last time. If things go our way we can win the second time out.”
