Mr. Eldred has been a member of the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals since 1985.
“My candidacy is basically one of moderation,” he said. “Some are single-issue oriented, but I’m in it for the long haul. After all, it is a fouryear term.
“I stand,” he said, “for representation of all factions of the residents of the town, as opposed to representation of the interests of a few.”
The new council, Mr. Eldred said, should steer the town in a direction so that “we can keep it a place where all people can live and enjoy life . . . there are many things which, if handled wrongly, could drive average people out.”
He advocates the involvement of as many residents as possible in the town’s government. TTie “mystique” created in the past about town government drove people away, Mr. Eldred said. “The more involvement by people the better. The result will be for everyone to help maintain a town suited for all. We can’t keep it suited for all if we don’t hear from everyone — and the best way to do that is to make it comfortable for everyone to speak.” .
Whoever is elected, he said, has a hard act to follow. “The current council has been an exceptionally good one. On balance, its handling of issues has been of benefit to the town. The new council will be hardpressed to match its record.”
