The tunnels is perhaps 8-12 inches long and about 3/8 inch in diameter, he said, so it’s unlikely to cause any major structural damage.
“I think they’re more of a nuisance than anything else,” Mr. Fell said. “It would have to be something long-term — their coming back to the same area year after year — before you had any sort of serious problem.”
Adult female carpenter bees carve out a tunnel-nest in spring although most are also reused. Males can be seen flying around near sites hoping to attract a female. The male bee looks much like a bumble bee, Mr. Fell said, and in this courting stage, he is very territorial.
“They’ll attack. They’ll divebomb if you come near them,” he said. “If you throw a little stone up at them, they’ll chase the stone. They’ll chase anything — I’ve seen them chase dogs and birds.”
