To the editor:
During the last several months, f .many people have asked me to con'sider entering my pame on the ballot for Town Council or to consider a “write in.” Although I very much appreciate these requests, I must decline.
My family and I have been back in Virginia for not quite seven years and I have served on Council for six of those years. This time has been extremely enjoyable and educational; but, I do not consider a “write in” a proper way to become a candidate. Such a candidate does not have to discuss issues or answer questions — so I must say that I completely disapprove of this method of running for office and will not accept any position if “written in. ”
I would, however, like to tell you, my friends, what an honor it has been to serve on the current Town Council. The Town of Washington is indeed fortunate to be served by such intelligent, honorable and unselfish people. I have witnessed almost every one of them cast votes that were for the good of the Town, but not necessarily for the individual’s own interests.
The business of the Town has been conducted, in my opinion, for the first time as an efficient small business. This business has become somewhat sophisticated and consumes a great deal of thought and time. The Council has dealt with such issues as the water system, completing final designs for its upgrade, negotiating financing and scheduling work to begin as soon as
