I would have hoped a newspaper might also have asked, in a spirit of wry humor, how our society as a whole measures up to our own moral posturing. Across our country the laws governing humane slaughter of food animals are a farce. The animal decimation of deer, by gun or bow, is a legal sport. In every state the sale of fur coats is legal, and their owners index their superiority by the beauty and rarity of the animals slain.
Finally, Where was your moral indignation a few months ago when a property owner shot and killed a neighbor’s dog, covered in your “letters to the editor” only, when that dog was not an unlicensed stray but a loved and clearly tagged housepet?
You leave me (and others) no release from the suspicion that the distinction between the two cases lies in the fact that Mr. Lopez is Hispanic.
