Starting in May, Hospice of the Rapidan becomes the sixth Hospice of Virginia to participate in the Hospice Medicare Benefit.
The Hospice Medicare Benefit is a direct result of 1982 federal legislation making hospice care a reimbursable alternative for terminally ill Medicare patients nationwide. The benefit officially recognized hospice care as an important part of our health care system.
Although Hospice care in the United States is only 15 years old, it is regarded as an important option for people with a medically diagnosed life expectancy of six months or less. Patients choosing hospice care are no longer seeking curative treatment but rather elect to receive care emphasizing comfort, including pain relief, and quality of life. This care helps patients bring their Jives to a close with a sense of control and completion while supporting their families.
Under the Hospice Medicare Benefit, the patient has little out of pocket expense. Virtually all services related to the terminal illness are covered without the patient’s financial participation.
