Besides being downright annoying, the pesky insects can do plenty of harm to your pet, too. Do you feel like giving up? According to a veterinarian for the Petfood Nutrition Research Farm as published in “Cat Companion,” a flea is such a strange little creature. Bom from a cocoon, with a torso compacted as if it had been squeezed together, it is barely bigger than the bead of a pin. Yet, the spring in its powerful legs can propel it up to 100 times its body length — the equivalent of a six-foot man jumping over two football fields laid end to end. On its feet are tiny hooks that allow it to maneuver swiftly amid fur and hair. Its limited agenda calls for it to suck blood, its only source of nourishment as an adult. It can go weeks, even months, between feedings, but it can neither mate nor reproduce until it has had its fill of blood.
