and no decisions should yet be made on the current application for a rezoning. “The winds of compromise are blowing, but there is nothing on the table.”
Adding that he has heard rumors that the rezoning might be scaled back to include only the property fronting on Main St., Mr. Miller added, if the application is changed it should be referred back to the Planning Comihission for another public hearing. “It needs to be discussed with the people, and laid out in public before a decision. If they want to do it, then do it.”
Janice S. Moffett
Mrs. Moffett is running for the town council for the first time. She said she feels that the town is at a “pivotal point,” and she decided to run for the council because, “as a person who lives in town, I would like to be in on the decisibn-making. ”
But serving as a representative of the people requires putting aside personal feelings too, she added. “It’s easy to get caught up in your own strong feelings and lose sight of what the people want.” Mrs. Moffett said she likes the feeling of Washington, “living in a small place, a nice place for kids to grow up. I can walk to the courthouse at night for a meeting and not worry.
“It’s a friendly place, and I’d like it to stay that way.”
She said that she hopes to get to know more town residents better, so that they will feel comfortable expressing their opinions about issues facing the town. “There’s not anyone who doesn’t have a strong opinion — and I would like them to share it so I can represent their opinion . . . not just my opinion, but what they want.”
