saves landfill space. Planting trees not only beautifies an area, but also supplies oxygen to the air. Using mass transit, walking rather than riding, and carpooling will reduce smog, conserve gas and possibly save money in fuel costs and car repairs.
Industries must minimize both the amount and toxicity of the waste they produce. They can explore the possibility of reclaiming waste for reuse or resale as a raw material. Find less harmful substitutes for materials already in use in manufacturing. Consider pollution prevention and waste minimization in the design of new manufacturing plants and processes. Use environmentally sound packaging design. And, the costs of these efforts could well be offset by the reduced waste disposal costs.
The best thing about the Earth Day 1990 celebration is that it doesn’t have to end when the celebration is over. We should take it with us — back to our homes, schools, work places and communities where we can make a difference.
