And with only two seniors in the starting line-up, Coach Leake said she expected the team would have some rough days. “I see that mistakes are not being made twice — and that’s positive. It means they are learning.”
And though the team has been struggling, there have been excellent individual efforts, she said. Tasha Roy has been outstanding at the plate during the last several games, with two triples and one home run. She has gone 8-12 in her last dozen trips to the plate, a .666 batting average.
Teammate Sherron Boddie has paced Roy’s effort, contributing two home runs and two doubles in the last three games.
In the last two seasons, Coach Leake said, the team’s problem has been at the plate. “This year, we’ve out-hit everybody but Page. But it just doesn’t seem that we can get everything going at once.”
In their first appearance against Stonewall Jackson, the coach said, the team racked up 13 errors. On Monday, there were only two. “With only two seniors, and we’re still competitive, I don’t feel it’s a losing season.
“All the players have improved, and their dedication is incredible.” The team has practiced every Saturday, and when rain washed out the practice last weekend, the girls insisted on an indoor practice in the high school gym, the coach said.
During several games, they were taunted by their opponents, she added, “but showed maturity in not deriding the other teams. They have won a lot of people’s respect.
“They may not be winning games,” Mrs. Leake said, “but they are winning in a lot of other areas. And,” she added, “they are going to win games. It will pay off in the long
