our children to pre-register,” he added, saying that in the past when pre-registration was in the 60s, fall kindergarten enrollment has been in the 80s.

He said that he was projecting enrollment for next year of 1,030, but that the budget was based on an enrollment of 1,010. With the county contributing only the minimum to cover 1,010, the school system would not be able to turn to the state for more funds if enrollment is the projected 1,030.

PTO President Greg Robertson suggested that the School Board consider adding funding to purchase four more temporary classrooms. “Everyone is aware of the overcrowding with fourth-grade classes of up to 30 students,” he said. He added that eight special education classes are being taught in four divided classrooms. “We even have students in the closets in the hallways for testing,” he said.

Mr. Robertson said the four additional classrooms would not take the place of the need for a middle school, but would “give us some breathing room.”

The School Board has scheduled a work session on the budget for next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the School Board office.
