If You Drink Alcoholic Beverages, Do So in Moderation - Drinking alcoholic beverages contributes to some health problems and to accidents. Although an occasional drink is usually not harmful, women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should not drink in order to avoid birth defects. Others who should avoid alcohol include those who plan to drive, who are involved in activities that require attentive skill, who operate equipment, or who are on medication. Moderate drinking for women means one drink a day; for men, two drinks a day. Count as one drink: 5 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer or 1-1/2 ounces of liquor.
