multimedia standard first aid, first responder, emergency medical technician, early defibrillation, shocktrauma technician, endotracheal intubation, cardiac technician, basic and advanced trauma life support. Specialized courses include emergency vehicle operation, vehicle extrication, incident command, and EMS hazardous materials.
In addition to training the RR EMS Council does the administrative work for the five counties and updates training to higher levels.
The Virginia Rescue Squad Assistance Fund provides hardship grants, 50/50 and 80/20, for volunteer rescue squads to help purchase urgently needed equipment. State funds collected when autos are registered, Two-For-Life, are also used by state and local EMS.
The RR EMS Council forwards requests for funds by PD-9 rescue squads to the state committee in Richmond. Transportation of patients in customized ambulances becomes more expensive as local rescue squads move from basic life support to advanced life support with cardiac units.
According to Ms. Stanley, “I attend the state financial meetings and every time I have to remind them that both our old and new ambulances must travel many thousands of miles on rural roads and rough terrain.”
The limited state funds for equipment are helpful but do not meet the operational needs of local rescue squads.
Financial support for rescue squads and the RR EMS Council depends primarily on the PD-9 county and town governments as well as corporate and individual donations.
