Five English teachers from Wakefield School in Marshall attended the Virginia Association of Teachers of English (VATE) winter regional conference at the Loudoun County High School in Leesburg.
Attending the conference were faculty from grades seven to twelve. These included Lee Buratti of Haymarket, Julie Duggan of The Plains, Janet Jones of Edinburg, Tutt Stapp-Harris of Huntly and Suzanne Wolfe of Front Royal.
The topic of this year’s conference was “The Energy of English: The Variety and Vitality of Communication.” Among the workshops geared to middle and upper school concerns were such topics as interdisciplinary studies of Arthurian legends, collaborative learning in the writing conference, found poetry, and using computers in process writing.
Two enriching speakers provided inspiration for the teachers representing members of NATE (the local affiliate of VATE): Henry Taylor, the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, read from his work “The Flying Change," and Betty Jean
