Leading the team offensively last year was All-Bull Run District designated hitter Kevin Daymude, who averaged about .400 and hit four home runs, including one game-winning grand slam. Daymude, a senior this year, was the team’s catcher last season but is projected to play third base, first base and pitch this season.
Other returning seniors are center fielder Justin Ferrance, who hit about .350 last year; and outfielder James Roy, a three-sport athlete coming off a tough basketball season that left him somewhat banged-up.
Utility infielder Richie Lillard and pitcher-outfielder Leroy North are the squad’s returning juniors. A new 11th grader this year is Kevin Jolliffe, and Coach Tupper said he is a projected starter in the outfield. Junior catcher Mike Jenkins is also expected to contribute.
Left-hander Welch and rightie Foster are both coming off freshman seasons that saw them emerge as the backbone of the pitching squad. Both are strong hitters and expected to be team leaders in this and coming years.
A1 Kellert, another returning sophomore who saw playing time last year (as a pinch runner mostly), will be playing infield and doing some pitching this year, said Coach Tupper. Chris Digges, a new player, is the only other sophomore.
Freshman Paul Brown, another three-sport athlete, has been seeing practice time at catcher and in the infield. Other freshmen: infielder James Eastham, infielder Daniel Dodson, third-baseman and pitcher Luke Zindel, and promising prospect Barry Tummeyer.
