said. “They felt it would not only have a U.S. audience, but also a European audience.” The first U.S. printing was 7,800, the English printing was 7,600, and the book is out in France and Italy as well. Mr. Johns said negor tiations are under way to come out with a German edition. Thus far, he said, sales have been strong and several major publications have printed favorable reviews.
Mr. Johns said the time he spent researching and photographing the rift was “the experience of a lifetime, it was incredible. What made it all the better was a I met my wife over there.” His wife, Elizabeth, was working for the U.S. Information Agency at the embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They were married in Africa and now have two children: Noel, 18 months, and newborn Katherine.
He works at the Geographic’s headquarters in D.C., so living ip Rappahannock is not impractical. Mr. Johns was familiar with the county, having spent some time on the Appalachian Trial for another assignment.
