Fourth-graders
bring history
to life with play
A Rappahannock Elementary fourth-grade class is bringing the past to life by researching, writing and producing a play about the area’s schools in bygone days.
Cynthia Brandt’s class began the project last month by breaking into teams that interviewed older people to get their memories of the old schools. The result were nine stories that the kids worked together to write themselves.
Some of the stories dealt with local schools such as Sperryville and Forest Grove; others were tales from relatives who attended oneroom schoolhouses in other parts of Virginia or other states.
Ms. Brandt’s class is now in the process of combining some of the stories into a play that they will rehearse before putting on in front of some of their schoolmates.
Fourth-grader Joshua Phillips said he found the past interesting, but he wouldn’t want to have lived back then.
