The College of William and Mary has named Kathleen Mary O’Neill of Front Royal a James Monroe Scholar. Miss O’Neill, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. O’Neill, is a 17-year-old senior at Wakefield Countiff Day School in Huntly.
Selected as one of this year’s top 150 applicants, she will be eligible to take honors courses as a freshman at the Williamsburg college and, after her junior year, will receive a $2,000 grant for study abroad.
Miss O’Neill is also a National Merit Hispanic Semin-finalist. Bom in Paraguay, she spoke no English when she started pre-kindergarten at Wakefield Country Day School. She credits her success to “the courses at the school, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn, my parents, and my teachers.”
Especially interested in languages and planning to eventually work with the United Nations, Miss O’Neill is off to a good start. She speaks English, French, and Spanish, her first language.
