The outline of the rift can be more or less followed by tracing the line formed by a series of elongated lakes both north and south of Lake Victoria.
The photographer said getting the photos he needed could be dangerous. The Afar tribesmen of the northern desert can be a violent, severe people, and the climatic differences over the length of the rift were radical. “You learn to be careftil. You come to the environment over there on the environment’s terms. . . . People die out there all the time; they have car trouble, all kinds of things can happen.”
Mr. Johns wrote the five chapters of the book and took all 112 hill-color photographs. The introduction was penned by Patrick Hemingway, son of the great novelist.
