A less fortunate side of the two party system is the stubborn uncompromising partisan politics that sometimes leaves important issues unresolved and prevents legislators from voting their conscience. The “drunken-driving” bill may have failed to reach a compromise for this reason.
In Rappahannock County, news of the General Assembly trickles in a lackluster fashion. As we welcome our freshman delegate Jerry Wood back from Richmond, many of us are curious how he voted on several budget items. Democratic supported amendments continue to bloat our state budget. The State Liaison Office in Washington, which costs $500,000 a year to operate, a proposal to increase the lieutenant governor’s expense account by $86,400 and a failed amendment to cut $44 million from the state lottery’s advertising budget are a few of the amendments that strike our curiosity.
Since Jerry Wood is a member of the health care industry, we wonder why he supported Gov. Wilder’s “Sick Tax” bill. Through cost shifts, this bill would have placed a greater burden on the patient to pay for health care needs.
We hope that partisan politics did not get the best of Mr. Wood. Many of us would welcome and look forward to reading how he voted on these and other important issues.
