“I’m a self-motivator,” she said, explaining now, after more than 20 months of being at home, she and her husband Lee (chief horticulturist for Mellon Orchards in Flint Hill) have developed their own business so that her graduate level education can be put to use.
She works evenings, early mornings and during her son’s naps, she said. Going into it she had no preconceptions about how easy or how difficult the job would be, but after months of mastering the job it is getting easier.
“We’ve become so career oriented that we’ve left mothering out,” said Mrs. Heddleston, who gave up teaching when her first son, Jonathan, now 12, was bom.
Since then, she has worked parttime and offered volunteer assistance to church, community and school. It’s a decision many other mothers are making as well, and finding to be the right choice for them.
