Central to
his life's work
To the Editor:
I would like to respond to recent letters concerning the debate over public funding for the arts.
I’ll never forget the time a good friend confessed to me the central sadness of his life. I was taken aback by what I heard from this person of firm position and established background. He had a high paying position in the high-tech end of a weapons developing firm.
“How much different would the world be if there was no war? Well, I certainly wouldn’t have a job! And also,” he said to me, “how much different would the world be if there was no music?”
This was a question that took my life as a musician and my awareness of that life to a new level. I was awakened by a sense of responsibility. No longer did I create just for myself. I cannot say that I express anything for anyone else. I can only hope I can express what it is like to be alive here and now and my heartfelt desire to be valued by my country.
How many different questions arise when we think of where our tax dollars and our life’s force are spent.
