I read Ron Frazier’s letter last week with the same degree of interest as I would an announcement of a book burning or an inquisition. It was a difficult choice deciding which aspect of his letter was most scary.
The viewpoint that creating art is not legitimate work, his suggestion that he would applaud the dismantling of the National Endowment for the Arts, or the lumping of all arts and artists in one category of “they” were all disconcerting. I think what I found most amazing is that Mr. Frazier would be happy to see funding cut for thousands and thousands of hard working artists because he finds one or two of them personally offensive. That would be the result if the NEA were “dismantled.” In the past 25 years the NEA has awarded nearly 90,000 grants with only a very small number (20 or so) creating any sort of nuqor controversy. With a wave of his righteous indignation Mr. Frazier would have many of our symphonies, theaters, ballet companies, operas, design studios, writers, poets, sculptors and painters go out
