Before taking the tour the board studied figures supplied by former elementary principal Mary Quaintance Snead for enrollment in the public schools since 1967 when the elementary school opened.
At that time the elementary school had 845 students in first through seventh grades.
Mrs. Snead said, “We had all kinds of room. There were not so many special classes.” Mrs. Snead said there were two special education classes in regular size rooms. There was a full room-sized teachers’ lounge and a separate music room. “We had a whole dental set up. All those rooms that have been divided are used for more special classes. I think that’s what has taken the space,” she added.
The figures show that between 1967 and 1976 enrollment at the elementary school dropped steadily to 717. At the high school during those years enrollment increased gradually from 325 tro 463.
The following year, when kindergarten was added, enrollment at the elementary school increased to 770. The following year, enrollment at the high school peaked at 476. After that enrollment at both schools decreased, dropping to 359 at the high school in 1989 and 556 at the elementary school in 1988. Since then enrollment has picked up at both schools, to 367 at the high school and 632 at the elementary school this year.
