The arguments for a new track and field facility are compelling. Attendees heard of students unable to safely practice hurdles and other events on the aged cinder track; of student athletes with astonishing promise who cannot fully develop their abilities and thus cannot optimize opportunities for college scholarships; of the difficulty in attracting and retaining experienced coaches; of the embarrassment and disadvantage of not being able to host meets because of the non-regulation and unsafe facility.
As one student related, “Kids from other schools laugh at us ‘cause we don’t have a track . . . it’s kind of like we don’t have a bathroom.”
