No. I think meeting state mandates will enable a student to further their education. This program should be well rounded, to me state mandates are a basic program. I hope we do not teach students to just meet the Standard of Learning.

The programs need to be structured so that we are not only meeting the state mandates, but are exceeding them. If for some reason when the SOL or other tests are given and the children failed to excel on them, the county would not be in danger of losing the state appropriations. We are letting the SOL drive the teacher’s curriculum.

No. But until we find some other way of generating more revenue for expanded education, I think we have no other choice. We are finding just keeping up with state mandates is a burden on taxes. Will the state mandates provide quality education? Only at a minimum.

State mandates are a good basis for our school system. Presently, the new SOL’s require much more than basic skills and literacy, and our schools are working hard to keep up and adjust. Quality education is an all-encompassing phrase. The School Board, parents and the community should work together to define the educational components wanted for our children that are not covered by the State guidelines and support funding for them.
