Those in attendance also heard from Meredith Gorfein, who is challenging Jay Katzen for the 31st District Virginia House of Delegates seat. Ms. Gorfein spoke briefly on issues presently affecting Rappahannock County.
Ms. Gorfein commented on taxes, education and zoning. She said that the state doesn’t give Rappahannock County enough money for schools. Ms. Gorfein added that the state ties the hands of localities in matters of raising funds. She also said that state taxes haven’t increased in years, and as a result local real estate taxes are having to be raised.
The candidates for the constitutional offices spoke to those in attendance briefly. Treasurer Frances Foster, Commissioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins, Court Clerk Diane Bruce and Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke are all running unopposed. They all committed to continue serving the county to the best of their ability.
Joy Sloane, who moderated the event, made a brief comment advising everyone to keep the forum and the campaign friendly and orderly. She said “Long after this forum and election are over, we will still live and work together.”
