Sherertz touched on some of his accomplishments since becoming Sheriff last year, including the Citizens Advisory Committee, School Resource Officer and Senior Safety Call. “We will always be proactive,” said Sherertz.
Woodward spoke of his previous experience as Sheriff, 12 years, as well as his current experience with the Department of Corrections. He added “I have always given 100 percent, and will continue to do so if elected.”
One issue of significance to the Amissville area is the absence of a 911 system there. Residents complain that when they make a 911 call it is routed to Culpeper County and then to Rappahannock County, wasting valuable time in an emergency.
Woodward said that he would push to make 911 available for everyone. He added that he was “very active” in getting 911 into the county, but can’t say as to what has happened to the system since he has not been Sheriff. Sherertz said that street addresses are not compatible with the software being used. He noted that Richie Burke, county E-9il Coordinator, and technicians are working to solve the problem.
Both candidates would support a local parking ordinance. Woodward said that he has supported such an ordinance in the past, but that the Board of Supervisors hasn’t. Sherertz said that an ordinance would solve problems in Flint Hill, Washington and Sperryville.
The issue of training for dispatchers was also brought up. Sherertz said that dispatchers receive training from the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy, and are assigned a Field Training Officer upon returning to the Sheriff’s Office. Woodward said that he thinks fire and rescue dispatch has gone downhill since he was Sheriff. Sherertz added that the Sheriff’s Office currently has trained dispatchers.
