Fireman to host Apple Festival
The Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary will be holding their first Fireman’s Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the carnival grounds. There will be fun for the entire family including a quilt contest, an apple pie contest, a pumpkin pie contest, crafts, antique cars and lots of good food.
The Sperryville Auxiliary is seeking contestants to enter their handmade quilts and homemade apple and pumpkin pies, lb enter your quilts or homemade pies call Charlotte Jenkins at 987-8683 before 7 p.m. The Auxiliary is also looking for craft vendors and flea market vendors. Anyone who would like to be a part of the festival or would like more information about this upcoming event may call Marsha Thompson at 987-8530 or Diane Weakley at 987-8275.
Potluck picnic in the park
An old-fashioned community picnic will be held from 3 p.m. to dark on Monday, Oct. 11 at the Rappahannock Park on US 211 across the highway from the Town of Washington. Meredith Gorfein, Rappahannock resident and candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates from this district, will be the picnic’s guest of honor.
The picnic (to be held rain or shine) is sponsored by the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee, and all Rappahannock resiaents are invited to attend. Families are encouraged to bring children. Meredith is looking forward to meeting informally with voters and their families and to exchanging ideas about issues in the upcoming November election. Musical entertainment will be provided by David Clanagan. And Co’oter’s Ben Jones has said he plans to drop by. Soft drinks, cider and coffee will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish of their choice to share with their neighbors.

Wildlife program planned
There seems to be a real need for public exposure to enhancing and learning about our native wildlife, as one of the assets of Rappahannock County. So a program has been set, at the Rappahannock Library, on Oct. 29 covering two main subjects: White Tail Deer in Rappahannock County - Problems and Possible Solutions! and Attracting Quail and Turkey to our property. The presentations will be given by two Virginia game biologists, Dan Love lace, Senior Game Biologist and Patty Moore, State of Virginia Quail Specialist. For more information call 675-3152.
Friends of Sherertz to meet
The public is cordially invited to meet with Larry C. Sherertz, incumbent candidate for Sheriff of Rappahannock County at an informal gathering in the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Hall from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Sheriff Sherertz will be available to personally meet with attendees and discuss local issues. Refreshments will be provided.
