Hard on the heels of the public rejection of recommendations for a town-wide waste water treatment facility, Washington residents again voiced their opposition—this time to the purchase of a 21 acre parcel that could have been used for an additional town well or for the siting of a town septic field.
In a public hearing that preceded regular Town Council business, many of the residents who slapped down the Town’s Wastewater Study Committee recommendations for a sewage treatment facility on Monday, April 10, came back to register their disapproval of the land purchase, some apparently believing that the two issues were closely related.
Mayor Stu Willis had some difficulty in keeping the hearing focused on the land purchase and not upon the issue of sewage treatment, but overwhelming public sentiment on the sewage question spilled over and doused any hope of support for the purchase of the parcel.
Though Town Council members have spent some time and effort investigating land prospects suitable for impending town needs, public comment spoke to the unsuitability of the subject parcel.
