Organizers for the Year 2000 Rappahannock County Relay for Life announced that more than twenty teams . have already registered. The Relay, which takes place on May 19 and 20, is a fund raising event of the American Cancer Society, the nationwide, community-based, organization dedicated to eliminating cancer and suffering caused by cancer.
Similar events take place in thousands of communities throughout spring and early summer.
The Relay is organized around teams of ' up to fifteen people from businesses, churches, civic groups, and clubs, and families. Tbam members take turns walking or running the track and each team keeps a member on the track throughout the Relay. Each team tries to raise at least a thousand dollars by soliciting funds from friends, colleagues, and family or through such things as bake and/or yard sales, auctions, and dances.
Since the money is raised in advance, everyone can enjoy the fun of the Relay itself. Music, food, team campsites, entertainment, contests, and camaraderie combine to create a slumber party full of family fun.
A Relay for Life opens as cancer survivors walk, run, or wheelchair the first lap in celebration of their victory. Mrs. Ellen Joback, who is coordinating the Survivor’s Lap this year, encourages all county survivors to participate. Persons who want to
